Let's make a home for flying squirrels! We're holding a workshop to build a large nest box.

Did you know that flying squirrels live in Karuizawa?
Because they are nocturnal, you don't often get the chance to see them, but they actually live in forests close to home.

At "Picchio," we will be holding a workshop on November 7th (Sat) and 8th (Sun), 2026, called "Let's Make a Large Nest Box That Flying Squirrels Can Use," where you can learn to make a large nest box that flying squirrels can use.

On the day of the tour, we will begin by taking a stroll through the Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest, where flying squirrels live. While searching for signs of flying squirrels and observing nest boxes installed in the forest, Picchio staff will introduce you to the flying squirrels' diet and lifestyle.

Once we arrive at the clearing in the forest, it's time to build the nest boxes. Using nest box kits sized to be easily accessible for flying squirrels, participants will work together to assemble them. The completed nest boxes can be taken home and installed in trees in your own garden.

It may take some time before flying squirrels find and use the nest box you set up. It's an experience that allows you to feel connected to nature, as you learn about the creatures of the forest, prepare a new home for them, and look forward to the day they use it.

This is recommended not only for families but also for anyone interested in the ecology of flying squirrels. Why not learn about the flying squirrels that live in the forests of Karuizawa together with the staff of Picchio?
